The answers are yours. The work to find them is ours.

Smart, driven, and honest enough to know you could use a real thought partner. That's not a weakness. That's exactly how the best people get where they're going.

The answers are yours. The work to find them is ours.

Let’s figure out what’s in the way.

Smart, driven, and honest enough to know you could use a real thought partner. That's not a weakness. That's exactly how the best people get where they're going.

What coaching is

Coaching is not advice. It's partnership. It's something that actually moves you forward.

Coaching is a structured partnership built around one question: what's getting in the way of where you want to go? Not in a vague, open-ended way. In a specific, roll-up-your-sleeves, let's-actually-figure-this-out way.

And you don't need to walk in with a perfect answer. Some people come in chasing a promotion. Others are weighing a pivot, feeling stuck in a role, navigating imposter syndrome, or just sensing that something needs to change but not quite knowing what. Wherever you're starting from, that's the starting point.

There's something that happens when you say out loud, to someone who's genuinely listening and has no stake in what you decide, where you actually are and what you actually want. Clarity tends to follow. So does momentum. Coaching creates the conditions for both, with a thought partner who will ask the right questions, reflect back what they're hearing, and help you figure out your next move, together.

Coaching is goal-oriented

We start with where you want to go and work backward from there.

A woman at a laptop celebrates a breakthrough — capturing the momentum built through leadership coaching for women in social impact, nonprofit, and government careers.

Coaching builds momentum

Coaching creates forward motion. Sessions build on each other, and progress compounds.

Two women in animated conversation — illustrating the forward-facing thought partnership at the heart of career coaching for mission-driven professionals navigating transitions and next steps.

Coaching is forward-facing

This isn't about the past. It's about what's next.

Two women work side by side at a desk — reflecting the collaborative, no-stake coaching relationship that defines leadership coaching for nonprofit, advocacy, and public service professionals.

Coaching is collaborative

We build it together, and it stays yours.

Coaching works best when you have a specific goal you're working toward and you're ready to take action on it. If you're not sure whether coaching is the right fit for where you are right now, the intro call is a good place to start. We can figure that out together too.

Mollie Stephens, ICF PCC Trainee and founder of Matter Collaborative, offering leadership and career coaching for mission-driven professionals in the US.

When we work together, you get someone who already understands the world you're operating in.

You don't need someone to hand you a plan. You need someone who will help you build one that's actually yours.

Our sessions tend to feel like a real conversation. Not a debrief, not a performance review, not someone reading from a coaching playbook. You'll leave with clarity you didn't have when you walked in, and usually a next step that actually feels doable.

That's partly because before I called myself a coach, I spent years working inside nonprofit, government, and helping professions. I know the particular weight of mission-driven work, the budget constraints, the political dynamics, the way ambition can feel complicated when you care deeply about the cause and not just the title. So when you're describing your situation, we're usually starting from a place of shared understanding.

My background is rooted in clinical social work, which shapes how I listen and what I notice in our conversations. And having led a coaching team that has supported thousands of clients to real outcomes, I bring more than my own experience to our work. I've seen what actually moves people forward across hundreds of careers and dozens of industries, and I draw on all of it when we're figuring out what's next for you.

FAQs

Good questions. let’s dig in.

  • Coaching is forward-facing and goal-oriented. It's for moments when something has opened up and you're ready to take action. We start with a specific professional or career goal and work toward it together. Therapy goes deeper into the personal history, patterns, and beliefs that have shaped you over time. They serve different purposes, and the right fit really depends on where you are right now. Because I'm trained in both, I can help you think through which one makes the most sense for what you're navigating.

  • Most of the people I work with are navigating something real: a career transition, a promotion they're going after, a salary negotiation, a step into a new level of leadership, or just a genuine desire to grow and figure out what's next. What we usually have in common before we even start is that they're ready to take focused, intentional action and they don't want to do it alone. That's where I come in.

  • Yes, and it's one of my favorite things about this work. All of our sessions are virtual, held by phone or video, which means we can work together whether you're across town or across the world. Geography has never been a barrier to doing this well.

  • It really depends on where you are and how much support you want along the way. The Spark Package is a great starting point if you have a specific, focused goal and a shorter timeline. Expand works well when you're navigating a bigger transition over several months. And Lasting is for someone who wants a deep, sustained partnership across a real arc of growth. Honestly, we'll figure this out together on the intro call. That's exactly what it's for.

  • Group coaching is peer-based learning in a small community. You bring real challenges, peers offer perspective, and you leave with clarity plus a trusted community. It's different from 1:1 coaching because the value comes not just from the facilitator but from the collective wisdom of the group. It works best if you're ready to be vulnerable, interested in learning from peers, and excited about mutual accountability and growth. I'm currently developing group coaching cohorts for mission-driven professionals. If you're interested in upcoming offerings, email me at mollie@mattercollab.com and I'll add you to the interest list.
