Your mission matters.

Strategic consulting for mission-driven organizations ready to design, scale, and measure their impact.

Built for organizations that already believe in their purpose.

My consulting clients are doing real, meaningful work. They've built something that matters, and they know it. They've also hit a moment where good intentions aren't enough. They need structure, strategy, and a partner who understands both the human side of leadership development and the operational side of making it scale.

You might be here because you're growing and need to scale your programs without losing what makes them work. Because your team wants to integrate coaching but doesn't know where to start. Because you have meaningful outcomes data and haven't yet found the right way to tell that story. Because you've navigated a leadership transition and something needs to be rebuilt.

Whatever the moment, the through line is this: you believe in the power of relationships in impact. You just need someone who can help you build the infrastructure to match.

  • "Mollie's work with teams is grounding, energizing, and consistently inspiring. Her presence, perspective, and integrity raises the bar, not just in the work, but in how the work gets done, which matters more than organizations probably realize."

Where we do the work.

Every engagement is shaped around what your organization actually needs. Here's where most of that work lives:

PROGRAM DESIGN + SCALING

You have a program that's working. Now you need it to grow without losing what makes it meaningful. We design the strategy together, and I coach you and your team through implementing it, so the vision and the execution stay connected all the way through.

ECOSYSTEM BUILDING + COACHING INTEGRATION

Coaching is most powerful when it's woven into how an organization already works, not added on top. I help you identify where coaching practices, frameworks, and a coaching mindset fit naturally into your existing programs, fellowships, or team structures, and build a plan to bring that to life.

From conversation to something that lasts.

The thing that shapes how I work is this: I don't have a stake in what you decide. I'm not here to sell you a framework, protect a methodology, or convince you of an answer I already had before I walked in.

I'm here to ask the right questions, help you think more clearly about your organization and your people, and design something together that actually fits. Then I stay and coach you through building it, because a strategy that lives in a document isn't a strategy. That combination, genuine partnership without an agenda, is what I've found creates the most lasting change.

Here's what that looks like in practice.

  • Before any scope is set, we talk. I want to hear about your organization, your programs, your people, and where you feel stuck or ready to grow. This conversation is complimentary and it's how we both figure out if we're a good fit.

  • We get specific together. What are we building, by when, and what does success look like for your organization? I take this foundation seriously because the quality of everything downstream depends on it.

  • You bring the context. I bring the experience building and scaling programs like yours. Together we design something that is equitable, sustainable, and actually fits how your organization works.

  • This is the part that makes the difference. I stay with you through implementation, coaching your team as the work moves from strategy into reality, so what we designed together actually holds.

I've built these systems. I know how they break.

I've never believed you can separate the person from the work. That conviction shapes everything about how I consult.

Mollie Stephens, founder of Matter Collaborative, smiling warmly in a bright home office — representing the approachable, direct consulting partnership she brings to mission-driven nonprofits and social impact organizations.

Before founding Matter Collaborative, I spent 20 years in public service and advocacy work, including 11 years at Leadership for Educational Equity, most recently leading a team that supported hundreds of coaching clients annually. That work taught me what it actually takes to build people development programs that scale without losing their soul, and how quickly a good program can stall without the right infrastructure behind it.

Through Matter Collab, I design and facilitate transformational sessions for hundreds of mid- and senior-level leaders across government, nonprofit, and public health sectors. I also serve as a Lecturer at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, where I teach public affairs careers to graduate students.

My work is grounded in a few things I don't negotiate on: that people can't be separated from their stories or their systems, that equity isn't an add-on but a design principle, and that real change happens in relationships, not just in strategy documents.

Let's work together.

I'd love to hear what you're working on! Share a little about yourself and your project, and I'll reach out to set up a conversation.

Things people ask.

The consulting process is a little different for everyone. Here's what comes up most.

  • My consulting work is project-specific. I take on a small number of engagements at a time, and the ones I say yes to are the ones where there's genuine synergy between what an organization needs and what I do best. The organizations I tend to work with are at an inflection point: a program that has outgrown its systems, a leadership development offering that needs to scale, or a team trying to figure out how to build a more cohesive ecosystem of support for the people they serve. If any of that sounds familiar, I'd love to have a conversation. And if it turns out we're not the right fit, I'll do my best to point you toward someone who is.

  • I focus on a specific slice of nonprofit leadership consulting: helping organizations scale their programs and build ecosystems of support across multiple formats. The shorthand is: you have something that is working, and now you need to figure out how to grow it thoughtfully, structure it for sustainability, or translate it across new populations or contexts. I keep my consulting work limited on purpose, because what I say yes to deserves my full attention and genuine investment.

  • Every engagement begins with a deep listening conversation. Before we build anything together, I want to understand your organization, your people, and what you're truly trying to create. From there we define scope, set a clear timeline, and align on goals. Most of my engagements are project-based with a defined beginning and end, focused, high-impact, and built around the specific question your organization is trying to answer. No open-ended retainers, no scope creep. Just the work.

  • Reach out with a brief description of your organization and what you're hoping to work on. I'll respond within two business days and we'll find time to talk. I'm genuinely selective about the consulting work I take on, not because I'm not interested, but because I believe the best partnerships are built on real alignment. Where that exists, I'm fully in. Where it doesn't, I'll do my best to connect you with someone who is the right fit.
