Finally, someone who gets what matters.

The people who find their way here are usually carrying a lot. A career transition, a step into greater power, the tension between the change they want to make in the world and the inner work they know it requires. They're in public service, nonprofit, helping professions, and social impact. I know that world. I've sat in those rooms. And this is why I do this work because I believe the right support at the right moment changes everything.

The work looks different depending on where you're standing. The partnership doesn't.

Where are you right now?

Different moments call for different kinds of support. See what resonates.

THERAPY

The inner work is its own kind of brave. Therapy is a space to get curious about your patterns, your history, the family systems and cultural forces that shaped who you are. No fixing. No performing.

CAREER & LEADERSHIP COACHING

An AI can give you a framework, but can’t sit with you in the hard part. That’s where a real thought partner comes in, someone who understands the world you’re leading in and helps you figure out exactly what to do next.

CONSULTING

Good work deserves good systems. Consulting for mission-driven organizations ready to do it better: nonprofits, civic programs, government agencies, foundations. The human side and the structural side, together.

Hey, I’m Mollie.

I’m really glad you’re here.

Mollie Stephens, LCSW-A, MPP, and ICF PCC Trainee — therapist, leadership coach, and founder of Matter Collaborative, serving mission-driven professionals across the US and in North Carolina.

Some people need to go inward. Some are ready to move. Some are building something and need a partner who can see the whole architecture. I created Matter Collaborative because the right support looks different depending on where you are, and because those moments are too important to navigate alone.

My background is a mix of clinical social and advocacy work. I spent 20 years in public service and advocacy work, including 11 years at Leadership for Educational Equity, most recently leading a team that supported hundreds of coaching clients annually. I also teach public affairs careers to graduate students at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs. All of that lives in the room with us. I know this sector, I know these pressures, and I show up ready to learn the rest.

Through leadership and career coaching, therapy, and organizational consulting, I work with mission-driven professionals and the organizations they lead. The work itself is pretty straightforward. You say out loud where you are. I hear it, hold it, and help you figure out what comes next. If you have ever felt like the systems around you were not built with you in mind, you are exactly who I had in mind when I built this. Let's see this through.

  • “Mollie helped me realize that I am a valuable asset, and it was with her guidance and mentoring that I was able to land an ideal new position.”

Good questions. Let's get into it.

  • Here's a rough guide: therapy goes deeper into the patterns and history that have shaped you over time. Coaching is forward-facing and goal-oriented, for moments when you're ready to take action on something specific. Consulting is for organizations that need a strategic thought partner to design, scale, or measure their programs. Still not sure? Start with whichever feels closest to where you are right now.

  • It depends on the service. Coaching and consulting are available virtually to clients anywhere in the United States and internationally. Therapy is limited to clients located in North Carolina, where I'm licensed.

  • A few things. I have spent 20 years inside the same worlds my clients work in, which means I understand the culture, the pressure, and what it actually costs to do this kind of work. I am trained in clinical therapy, coaching, and consulting, so when it comes to figuring out what you need, I am not trying to fit you into the one thing I offer. The only thing I am invested in is you finding the right path, whatever that looks like. And honestly, I just really care about the people I work with. That probably sounds simple, but it shapes everything.
